Baumé (ºbé)
Relative density (RD) scale used for hydrometer reading of both lighter than water and heavier than water solutions. One degree Baumé is equivalent to about 1.80 percent dissolved solids or 1.8 degrees Brix. In the winemaking industry, one degree Baumé grape juice ferments out to approximately one percent alcohol. The formula for lighter than water solutions is ºBé = (144.3 ÷ RD) – 144.3. For heavier than water solutions ºBé = 144.3 – (144.3 ÷ RD). Named after the French chemist Antoine Baumé (1728-1804) who invented this scale about the year 1800.
